Environmentally Green Apple
Apple designs products with the environment in mind, taking a complete product life cycle approach in determining environmental impact. Their life cycle analysis accounts for all emissions associated with their products, including raw material extraction, manufacturing, packaging, transportation, a 3 to 4 year period of use, and recycling.
iMac includes a highly efficient power supply that reduces the amount of power wasted when bringing electricity from the wall to your computer. Lower power consumption reduces energy bills and lessens the environmental impact of greenhouse gas emissions from power plants. The iMac uses energy-efficient hardware components that work hand in hand with the operating system to conserve power. Mac OS X spins down hard drives and activates sleep mode on already energy-efficient LED-backlit displays.
It’s also what iMac doesn’t have that makes it more environmentally friendly. It’s free of many harmful toxins, including mercury, arsenic, BFRs, and PVC. Apple engineers have worked hard to eliminate BFRs and PVC from iMac circuit boards, internal and external cables, connectors, insulators, and adhesives. And they’ve eliminated many other toxins that are a common part of desktop computer manufacturing — choosing, for example, mercury-free backlighting and arsenic-free glass for the iMac display.
Designing green products includes considering the environmental impact of the materials used to make them. From the glass, plastic, and metal in our products to the paper and ink in their packaging. Apple designers and engineers have integrated the entire iMac computer into an enclosure made from a single, solid piece of recyclable aluminum. The display is made of recyclable glass. Both the aluminum and glass materials are very desirable to recyclers, which means the raw materials used in iMac can be reused in other products. Because iMac is made from materials such as aluminum and glass, it’s more likely to be recycled and reused at the end of its long, productive life.
New iMac
Big, beautiful displays dominate the new iMacs. These 21.5 inch and 27 inch displays with edge-to-edge glass cover nearly the entire front of the enclosure. When all you see is the display, nothing gets between you and what’s onscreen. Because the LED backlight doesn’t take up much space, the iMac enclosure stays thin. And the display is designed to look great when viewing from almost any angle.
The all-in-one design puts everything you need – display, processor, graphics card, hard drive, optical drive, memory, and more – inside one simple enclosure. A seamless, precision-forged enclosure makes the back of the iMac one continuous aluminum surface. And there’s only one cord: the power cord. This is the first Mac to come standard with the Apple Wireless Keyboard and the new wireless Magic Mouse.
Faster processors and faster graphics makes working with photos, editing video, or playing games a whole lot easier. The iMac also separates the two hottest components to keep things cool inside the enclosure, and the three fans inside iMac have been tuned to be ultraquiet. The result is a system that operates quickly and so quietly you hardly know it’s on.
Multi-Touch Magic Mouse
Apple has built a better mouse… the world’s first Multi-Touch mouse. There’s no scroll ball, no wheel, no cord, and no visible button. Instead, Magic Mouse uses Multi-Touch technology to let you control everything with simple gestures.
The seamless Multi-Touch surface covers the entire top surface of Magic Mouse, and the mouse itself is the button. Scroll in any direction with one finger, swipe through web pages and photos with two, and click and double-click anywhere. Inside Magic Mouse is a chip that tells it exactly what you want to do.
Scrolling with Magic Mouse isn’t your everyday scrolling. It supports momentum scrolling, where the scrolling speed is dictated by how fast or slowly you perform the gesture.
Magic Mouse uses powerful laser tracking that’s far more sensitive and responsive on more surfaces than traditional optical tracking. That means it tracks with precision on nearly every surface without the need for a mousepad.
Built-in software lets you configure Magic Mouse any way you want. Its smooth, seamless design is ambidextrous, and it supports two-button clicking – without buttons.
And, it’s wireless, too. A quick flick of the on/off switch helps conserve battery power while Magic Mouse is tucked in your bag. Even when it’s on, Magic Mouse manages power efficiently, by detecting periods of inactivity automatically.
New iPod shuffle
The new iPod shuffle now comes in five vibrant colors, 2GB and 4GB, and it talks. The anodized aluminum enclosure makes iPod shuffle sleek, durable, and colorful in gleaming pink, blue, green, black, or silver. And making its debut is the special edition in polished stainless steel. And yes, there’s still room for personalized engraving. Even the iPod shuffle clip rocks. It attaches securely to your shirt, jacket, workout gear, and backpack, making iPod shuffle the perfect fashion tech-cessory.
There is plenty of room to store hours of music (up to 1,000 songs with the 4GB model). There is room for playlists: one for your commute, one for the gym, one for just chilling out, and audiobooks, too. To create the world’s smallest music player, Apple moved the controls to the earphone cord. So when you want to play, pause, or skip to the next tune, you just follow the cord and press a button. The shuffle switch has three positions. Flip it to the left, and you’ll hear your music in a refreshingly random way. Flip it to the middle, and your songs play in order. Or flip to the right to turn iPod shuffle off.
With command central strategically placed in this more convenient location, you can navigate your music, and activate the VoiceOver feature, without taking your eyes off your run, your ride, or whatever you’re doing. VoiceOver tells you the name of the song and who performs it. It also announces your playlists. Say you’re listening to a song and want to know the title or the artist. With the press of a button, VoiceOver tells you without interrupting your music. VoiceOver also tells you the names of your playlists, so you can easily switch between them to find the right mix for your mood. And it can tell you in 20 languages.
New iPod nano
The new iPod nano from Apple now has a built-in video camera that lets you record fun as it happens. You can record video in portrait or landscape and capture audio, too. The video file sizes are perfect for sharing on YouTube or emailing to friends. It’s a video camera that’s small enough to take with you everywhere.
Another feature added is Genius Mixes. All you do is sync your iPod nano to iTunes, and Genius automatically searches your library and finds songs that sound great together to create up to 12 Genius Mixes. These mixes are like channels programmed entirely with your music. It’s a great way to rediscover songs you haven’t listened to in forever, and some you even forgot you had.
The new FM tuner lets you see the names of songs and artists, and two amazing features, Tagging and Live Pause, make listening to the radio nothing like listening to the radio. There’s always something great on the FM dial. And now the FM tuner lets you hear your favorite morning shows on your commute and discover new music while you work out. Say you need to take a quick break from listening to your favorite radio station. iPod nano also lets you pause it with a click. Another click and you’re listening to your station again. You can even rewind as far back as 15 minutes, then fast-forward to catch up to the live broadcast. You’re listening to the radio and you hear a song you like, but when you go to iTunes, you can’t remember the name or even who sings it. Enter iTunes Tagging. Now, you can use the Click Wheel on iPod nano to tag the song.
iPod nano now doubles as a Pedometer. It uses the built-in accelerometer to keep track of your steps and help you meet your fitness goals. You can create a daily step goal or set it to Always On so it counts all the steps you take, all the time. Which makes iPod nano the ideal exercise partner.
New iPod touch
Apple announces the new iPod touch – an ipod, pocket computer, and portable game player all in one.
Watch your movies and TV shows. Listen to your favorite tunes with room for up to 14,000 songs and up to 30 hours of audio playback time. Genius Mixes automatically searches your library and finds songs that sound great together. Voice Control allows you to tell iPod touch to play songs from a specific playlist or artist. A Wi-Fi connection and a tap on the iTunes icon are all it takes to get instant access to millions of songs and thousands of movies and TV shows.
Most of what you do online with a computer can easily be done on iPod touch. Built-in Wi-Fi means you can check your favorite blogs, write an email with a photo attached, or find out how to get to that new restaurant. When you think about it, iPod touch is a computer in your pocket. The new iPod touch is up to 50 percent faster than the previous-generation iPod touch. Typing on iPod touch is easy with its intelligent keyboard that predicts and suggests words as you type. If you’re connected to a wireless network, you can find your location and get a list of turn-by-turn directions. Social Networking is easy on Facebook or Twitter because they are just a tap away.
Games for iPod touch are made to take advantage of its built-in technologies such as the accelerometer, Multi-Touch, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. The result is truly immersive gameplay – whether you’re playing alone or with others in multiplayer mode. The new iPod touch features improved performance so games launch faster, and you experience richer, more lifelike textures and detail.
A new feature of iPod touch makes finding cool new apps even easier. Genius for apps works just like Genius for your music. Tap the Genius icon and get recommendations for apps that you might like based on those you already downloaded.
Multiply the fun by playing with your friends over Wi-Fi – whether they’re two cubicles or two continents away. The beauty of the accelerometer comes into play when you’re in racing games and your entire iPod becomes the steering wheel. What also sets iPod touch apart from traditional handheld gaming devices is its Multi-Touch interface. It means you’re not just playing a game, you’re interacting with the game.
