Hookuikahi Hawaiian Cultural Festival 2010 - Directory of KauaiThe Ho’oku’ikahi Hawaiian Cultural Festival will take place on August 14 and 15 at Pu’ukohola Heiau National Historic Site on the Big Island. This year marks the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Hawaiian Kingdom by Hawaii’s greatest monarch, Kamehameha the Great. The festival will include cultural ceremonies, hands-on demonstrations, traditional arts, crafts and games, and double-hulled canoe rides.

The festival begins Saturday morning at 6:30 am with several hours of ceremonies and traditional practices to watch. From 11:00 am to 3:00 pm you can participate in the celebration at the Royal Courtyard (Pelekane) with cultural demonstrations, traditional crafts, music, games, double-hulled canoe rides, and traditional food tasting. These events will resume on Sunday morning at about 10:00 am.

  • ‘Ohe Kāpala Ki‘i (Bamboo Stamp Designs)
  • Pahu (Drums)
  • Ulana Lau Niu (Frond Plaiting)
  • Kahili (Fly Brush)
  • Nī‘au Pūlumi (Hawaiian Broom)
  • Ipu (Gourd making)
  • Hana Pala‘ie (Loop and Ball Making)

  • Kumu La‘au (Woodwork)
  • Ku‘i Wauke (Tapa Pounding)
  • Awa (Traditional Drink)

Also planned to be in attendance is the Hokule’a. This world-famous traditional double-hulled voyaging canoe is to arrive at Kawaihae in time for the festival. Members of ‘Ohana Wa‘a (the Hawai‘i voyaging community) are sailing through the Hawaiian Islands in honor of legendary Master Navigator Mau Piailug who passed away this summer.
