Hawaiian Music and Amy Hanaialii

Amy Hanaiali’i has received a Grammy nomination for her new CD Amy Hanaiali’i and Slack Key Masters of Hawai’i. Her collaboration with Hawaii’s top slack key artists including Cyril Pahinui, Dennis Kamakahi, Jeff Peterson, and Sonny Lim features a vibrant array of new compositions and new adaptations of Hawaiian classics.

Amy’s talent is the result of a blend of classical training, modern musical influences, and heritage. Her success as a recording artist includes five Grammy nominations and fifteen Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, including the prestigious Female Vocalist of the Year (4 times), Hawaiian Album of the Year (3 times), Song of the Year, Group of the Year, Contemporary Album of the Year, and even Christmas Album of the Year.

This collaboration celebrates the diversity and depth of Hawaiian music today by showcasing each artist, but also bringing the group together for intimate duets and trios, featuring slack key, ukulele, steel guitar, and acoustic bass. The 16 songs on this recording demonstrate what happens when kindred spirits who share a deep respect for each other and Hawaiian culture come together to share their music.

“Working on this project was a complete joy,” said Amy Hanaiali‘i. “The Uncles are the true meaning of Hawaiian Music. There where Chicken Skin moments with every breath that I took.”

“This recording was the most meaningful project I have ever been involved with,” Jeff Peterson said. “It was a great honor to work with many of the artists who have inspired me to play and compose music. The energy of the group in the studio was absolutely amazing. We shared so much together—creativity, camaraderie, spontaneity, passion, joy, laughter, gratitude, and above all, Aloha.”

Hawaiian Music and Jeff Peterson

Jeff Peterson is at the heart of the Hawaiian music scene today. His latest solo CD Maui On My Mind was recognized as the Slack Key Album of the Year in 2010, and has been nominated for the 2011 Grammy Awards.

Jeff grew up on the slopes of Haleakala where he was introduced to the rich heritage of Hawaiian music by his father, a Hawaiian cowboy (paniolo). His focus on Slack Key guitar, classical, and jazz music has allowed him to develop a unique voice on the guitar while being deeply rooted in the traditions of his Hawaiian heritage.

“I experience a sense of deep reverence and aloha as I perform music for this unique island. The sound conjures images so familiar to me that I am inspired to reach deeper to find new ways to express myself. Even when I am miles away, I feel like I am home again. In ways that only music can express, Maui is on my mind.”

His passion for the guitar has also allowed him the opportunity to collaborate with a wide variety of artists from Hawaii. His latest release features his songwriting, performing, and producing on Amy Hanaiali’i and Slack Key Masters of Hawaii. The groundbreaking recording features a collaboration between Jeff, Amy Hanaiali’i, Cyril Pahinui, Dennis Kamakahi, Sonny Lim, and Chino Montero.
