Taste of Hawaii 2011

Taste of Hawaii 2011 - Directory of KauaiTaste of Hawaii 2011 will take place Sunday, June 5th, with gates opening at 11:30 am. This is the Ultimate Sunday Brunch. This a food and drink festival of the highest order. This is Kauai’s favorite day to eat, drink, and be merry.

Taste of Hawaii has been voted Best Community Event on Kauai for four years running. You can enjoy food prepared by 50 of Hawaii’s best chefs, imbibe at more than ten beverage stations of beer, wine, water, soft drinks, smoothies, coffee, and specialty coffee drinks. Meanwhile you can listen to 14 musical groups perform throughout the afternoon, and visit the large silent auction. Besides an upscale culinary garden party, it is also a fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Kapaa. Net proceeds from this event go back into our community to help worthy non-profit groups, and to fund scholarships for high school and community college students. A portion of the funds also go abroad where to help Rotary clubs in Third World countries provide basic necessities of life such as water wells to provide clean drinking water and toilet and hand-washing stations for rural schools.

Taste of Hawaii chefs in past years have served up delectable dishes like Scallop and Shrimp Gyoza with Tempura Shimeji mushrooms, or Kekaha Corn Edamame Relish and Miso Sapporo Pepper Sauce, or Kalua Pork Sandwich with Habanero Chili Pepper BBQ Sauce, on a Taro Roll with Maui Gold Pineapple Salsa, or Chocolate Bomb with Lilikoi. Hawaiian Music and Anuhea

Anuhea (Rylee Anuheake’alaokalokelani Jenkins) is a Hawaiian contemporary folk rock singer and songwriter. Born and raised on the island of Maui, her name in hawaiian means “a cool breeze of the heavenly rose”. Anuhea blends engaging lyrics with acoustic soul, pop and reggae into a style that has earned her a reputation as Hawaii’s newest rising star.

Anuhea graduated from Kamehameha Schools and then attended film school in Orange County California. After spending a year there she realized it was music she was most passionate about. Returning to the islands she immediately started performing at local coffee shops and restaurants. She put a band together using friends from around the island and began to market herself as a musician, acted as her own manager, booking agent, music producer and distributor, all while working as a cocktail waitress and barista.

Her debut album titled Anuhea, was released in 2009. With a delicate blend of fragility, strength, and sass, her sultry vocals and honest song writing weave acoustic soul, R&B, hip hop, reggae, and jazz together. A naturally gifted songwriter, Anuhea’s word choices are a clever balance of emotions where each song tells a unique story, each story a lesson learned. In 2010 Anuhea won her first 2 Na Hoku Hanohano awards for Most Promising Artist and Contemporary Album of the Year. “I just feel lucky that I’ve found my dream and am able to pursue it. My main goal as a music-maker is to help people find theirs, whatever it may be.”

Hawaiian Music and Cyril Pahinui

Cyril Pahinui is one of the most gifted guitarists and singers of Hawaiian music. As a slack key guitarist, his technical virtuosity, rhythmic adaptations, and instrumental harmonics impart the soul of Hawaiian music, and his beautiful, emotive voice renders an intimate picture of Hawaii.

Cyril Pahinui is the son of musical legend Gabby Pahinui. He started playing music from the time he could hold an ukulele, and began learning slack key at age seven by watching and listening to his father. Weekends at the Pahinui home were a continuous jam session, as musicians came by to jam with Gabby. Attendance at the weekend jam sessions mushroomed to a hundred or more musicians jamming from early on Friday morning and continuing straight through to Monday morning.

He played in his father’s group The Gabby Band, and later the Gabby Pahinui Hawaiian Band. He played with his brother in a band called The Characters, and later joined with two brothers for The Pahinui Bros album. As a member of the Peter Moon Band, they produced four albums, including Cane Fire, which received seven Na Hoku Hanohano Awards in 1983, including Album of the Year, Group of the Year, and Song of the Year.

In 1988, he recorded Cyril Pahinui, an album of traditional and contemporary songs, which won the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards for Best Contemporary Hawaiian Album and Best Male Vocalist. Cyril began recording for Dancing Cat Records and won multiple Na Hoku Hanohano Awards for Instrumental Album of the Year. He also performed on three compilation albums two of which won Grammy Awards for Best Hawaiian Music Album.

His father told him, “Play whatever you feel, whatever makes you happy, but always respect Hawaiian music and keep it in your heart.”
